Koekohe Beach, also known as Moeraki Boulders Beach, is renowned for its unique spherical boulders known as septarian concretions. These boulders, some measuring nearly 3 metres across, resemble giant dinosaur eggs, especially with the cracks on their surfaces. The traditional Māori legend suggests that these boulders are remnants of eel baskets from the wreck of the Āraiteuru, the canoe that brought their ancestors to the South Island. However, scientific studies indicate that these boulders formed over 60 million years ago from prehistoric mud, crystallising over approximately 5 million years. As the sea floor rose and eroded, these harder boulders were revealed.
